Time Capsule Marks Period of Expansion for North Main Street
By Thomas Gilbert
Wednesday, July 31st, 2019 – The North Columbia Business Association (NCBA) Time Capsule event was held Wednesday, July 31st, 2019 outside of the soon-to-be completed NOMA Station at the intersection of North Main Street and Confederate Avenue in the historic Cottontown neighborhood with the goal of helping to establish a community and unify businesses in the North Main area by inviting businesses and individuals within the Cottontown area to submit images and small items for storage within the time capsule. Neighborhood associations contributed minutes from previous meetings and menus from local Main Street restaurants were submitted as well. The time capsule will spend the next ten years in one of two robot sculptures, attached to Studio 2LR Architecture and Interiors, which are propane tanks retrofitted into cisterns that funnel groundwater away during heavy rainfall. Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin secured the time capsule in the robot cistern following remarks from himself, City Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine, NCBA Executive Director Sabrina Odom Edwards, as well as other city officials.

I got the chance to ask Councilwoman Devine what she thinks the Time Capsule event will do for the history and culture of the North Main area and she replied saying this project will “mark the changes and improvements in the community” as well as serve as an intriguing tourist attraction. In addition to generating increased interest in the Trestle District, Devine also believes the project serves as “a very innovative way to connect people and do something fun and learn about the area….” Also launched was a NOMA robot trails scavenger hunt with small ceramic robots marking the locations of twelve businesses along North Main Street, beckoning visitors to come inside and have a bite to eat. One new eatery that celebrated its grand opening across the street after the time capsule event concluded was NOMA Mediterranean Bistro by Al-Amir. I asked Rachel Debacker, an architect with Studio 2LR why North Main Street is worth maintaining and preserving and she had this to say: “It’s a corridor to our city. It’s kind of like a limb going back to the heart of the city with the capital. I think it’s important as you spread out that the city keeps up with these communities, these neighborhoods, these people that feed and help keep the city thriving.” The Trestle District noticeably has no parking meters to encourage residents and visitors to explore and enjoy the area at their own leisure. The time capsule marks a period of expansion and renewed interest for the North Main area and Columbia should look forward to the growth of the district over the course of the next ten years.
